Pakistan Announces Deal with Afghanistan to Halt Cross-Border Militancy

DOHA: Pakistan and Afghanistan have formally agreed to a ceasefire in Doha, Qatar. The agreement was confirmed by both the Qatari Foreign Ministry and Pakistani Defence Minister Khwaja Asif.

In a post on the social media platform X, Mr Asif stated that the deal includes an immediate halt to terrorist acts against Pakistan originating from Afghan territory. He added that both nations have pledged to respect each other’s sovereignty.

The negotiations, which were mediated by Qatar and Turkey, involved a Pakistani delegation led by Mr Asif and an Afghan delegation led by their Defence Minister, Mullah Mohammad Yaqoob.

The Qatari government described the ceasefire as a critical step towards lasting peace and stability in the region, which is expected to ease recent border tensions. Further discussions to solidify the agreement are scheduled to take place in Istanbul on October 25th.

Following recent border clashes between Pakistan And Afghanistan, the Qatar government  calls for calm, urging both sides to prioritize diplomacy and dialogue over confrontation. In a statement, the Qatari Ministry of Foreign Affairs stressed the need to work towards “containing differences in a manner that helps reduce tension and avoid escalation,” focusing on stability in Afghanistan and Pakistan is essential to broader regional peace.

Meanwhile, the Qatari ministry reasserted its support for all initiatives aimed at strengthening international peace and security. It also confirmed that the Doha’s commitment to promoting stability and prosperity for the people of both countries.

The renewed border clashes have raised alarm among regional powers, who fear that continued hostilities could destabilize an already fragile region.
