ISLAMABAD: The families of two young women who were killed in a traffic collision involving the son of a local judge have formally pardoned the accused. The proceedings took place at the District and Sessions Court in Islamabad, where the case had been under hearing since the incident occurred earlier this month.
The accused, Abu Zar, son of a sitting judge, had been facing charges after his vehicle struck two women riding a scooter on a major thoroughfare in the federal capital.
The victims’ families informed Judicial Magistrate Shaista Kundi that they had reached a settlement with the accused.
The families stated that they were forgiving Abu Zar and no longer wished to pursue the case. One of the deceased woman’s brothers appeared in court to deliver the family’s formal statement.
The father of the second victim was also present and recorded his statement before the magistrate. Furthermore, the tragic accident occurred a few days earlier when a speeding driver allegedly crashed into the two women’s scooter.
One victim died at the scene, while the second succumbed to her injuries after being transferred to the hospital. Moreover, Police had arrested the suspect shortly after the incident and registered a case under relevant traffic and criminal laws.
Abu Zar was initially handed over to the police on physical remand for investigation, which continued until the families’ decision to reconcile. In this regard, the pardon marks a turning point in a case that had generated public attention due to the involvement of a judge’s son and concerns over road safety in Islamabad.
The families did not publicly disclose the reasons behind their decision to forgive the accused, but their statements allowed the court to proceed with granting bail and releasing him from custody.
The incident has renewed calls from civil society for stricter enforcement of traffic regulations and greater awareness about road safety for motorists and two-wheel riders in the capital.
