Joint strategy finalized to address Gwadar’s water crisis

Gwadar: To address the ongoing water crisis in Gwadar, the Gwadar Port Authority (GPA), Public Health Engineering (PHE) Department, and Gwadar Development Authority (GDA) have agreed on a joint strategy.

As part of this initiative, the Government of Balochistan will utilize the 1.2 million gallons per day Chinese desalination plant located at Gwadar Port.

Out of this supply, approximately 700,000 to 800,000 gallons of water will be distributed daily to the old city of Gwadar.

The responsibility for effectively implementing this project will be jointly managed by the GPA and the PHE Department to ensure smooth water delivery to the affected areas.

Gwadar, despite being a strategic coastal city and the centerpiece of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), has long struggled with severe water shortages.

The city’s growing population and inadequate water infrastructure have led to chronic scarcity, forcing residents to rely on water tankers and rainwater.

The limited freshwater resources, lack of proper distribution systems, and delayed infrastructure projects have only intensified the crisis. This joint strategy marks a significant step toward sustainable relief for the people of Gwadar.
