OGDCL Commissions Jhal Magsi Gas Project in Balochistan

ISLAMABAD: Acting on Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif’s instructions for the fast-track development of Jhal Magsi district, Oil and Gas Development Company Limited (OGDCL) has completed and commissioned the Jhal Magsi Development Project and launched a series of CSR initiatives in the remote district of Balochistan. The government of Pakistan enabled the project by approving special incentives.

The project now produces about 14 million standard cubic feet per day (MMSCFD) of pipeline-quality gas and 45 barrels per day (BPD) of condensate. OGDCL has injected the gas into the Sui Southern Gas Company Limited (SSGC) network through a newly built 98-kilometer pipeline constructed by SSGC from the Jhal Magsi field to its tie-in point.

OGDCL began development work in February 2024 after the government approved incentives, including conversion from the 1997 Petroleum Policy to the Marginal Field Gas Pricing Policy. The government gave the project high priority to address the country’s energy needs, and OGDCL delivered it on an accelerated timeline despite technical and territorial challenges. The company’s scope of work included installing an Amine Unit, a Dehydration Unit, a Hot Oil Package, power generation facilities, and gathering systems.

The Jhal Magsi Field consists of two wells and operates as a joint venture led by OGDCL, which holds a 56 percent working interest. Pakistan Oilfields Limited (POL) owns 24 percent, and Government Holdings Private Limited (GHPL) owns 20 percent.

As part of its community development program, OGDCL has launched multiple Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives in Jhal Magsi. The company has built 84 climate-resilient houses, constructed the OGDCL Grammar School (50 percent complete), and partnered with Indus Hospital to establish a Mother & Child Health Care Facility (60 percent complete). OGDCL has awarded fully funded four-year scholarships to students at Sukkur IBA and provided technical training to 55 local youth through NAVTTC, with 30 graduates and 25 still in training.

To improve healthcare facilities, OGDCL has gifted two ambulances, organized annual free eye camps, and distributed ration bags to 800 families. The company has also installed two RO plants and an underground water tank to supply clean drinking water. In addition, OGDCL has sponsored the Jhal Magsi Desert Rally to promote local culture and sports.
