Islamabad suicide attack planned in Afghanistan: Atta Tarar

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s Information Minister, Atta Ullah Tarar, said the recent suicide attack at Islamabad’s district court was planned from Afghanistan.

Four facilitators linked to the attack have been arrested, he added.

Speaking to the media, Tarar presented an initial briefing on the security agencies’ investigation. He said the mastermind, Noor Mehsud, orchestrated the attack through Sajid Ullah, the main handler of the suicide bomber.

Both the bomber and the handler are Afghan nationals

The minister said the suicide bomber, identified as Shinwari, entered Pakistan prior to the attack. Intelligence indicates the bomber’s network had direct links with terrorist groups operating in Afghanistan.

Sajid Ullah, also known as “Shina,” traveled to Afghanistan last year. Tarar said he visited Jalalabad in 2024 and was briefed in Kabul about the Islamabad attack plan.

Facilitators Arrested

Security agencies acted promptly and arrested four facilitators. They provided the attacker with shelter, transportation, and local support. Authorities are extracting critical information from the suspects. Further raids and arrests are expected.

Attack Linked to Cross-Border Terror Network

Tarar said evidence shows the attack was orchestrated by terrorist networks across the border aiming to destabilize Pakistan. He added that Pakistani agencies are gathering more evidence to expose the network’s international connections.

Security Heightened in Islamabad

Following the attack, Islamabad’s security was tightened. Additional personnel were deployed around court buildings and sensitive government installations.
