Ishaq Dar to hold key talks with Marco Rubio in Washington amid rising US-Iran tensions

WASHINGTON: Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar is scheduled to visit Washington on Friday for high-level discussions with US Secretary of State and National Security Advisor Marco Rubio.

The visit comes at a critical time as tensions continue to rise between the United States, Israel and Iran, while diplomatic efforts are underway to seek a peaceful resolution to the ongoing conflict in the region.

In this regard, the two leaders will review bilateral relations and exchange views on important regional and global developments. The discussions are also expected to focus on enhancing cooperation in key sectors and strengthening diplomatic engagement between Pakistan and the United States.

The Foreign Office stated that Pakistan remains committed to promoting regional peace and stability through dialogue and diplomacy.

It added that the visit reflects Islamabad’s intention to further deepen its longstanding and broad-based partnership with Washington.

The visit takes place amid increasing hostilities in the Middle East, as the United States and Iran exchanged strong warnings and military signals following a cabinet meeting chaired by US President Donald Trump on Wednesday.

President Trump claimed that Tehran was under pressure and seeking an agreement, stating that Iran had limited choices in the current situation. However, an Iranian official rejected the statements and accused Washington of alternating between threats and calls for negotiations.
