Iran’s President praises Pak-Saudi defense pact as model for regional security

Iran welcomes Pak-Saudi defence deal as start of ‘comprehensive regional security system’

In a significant diplomatic gesture, Iran’s President Masoud Pezeshkian has welcomed the recent defense agreement signed between Pakistan and Saudi Arabia, framing it as a positive foundation for a broader regional security system .

Speaking at the United Nations General Assembly, President Pezeshkian stated that Iran welcomes the pact between its two “brotherly Islamic countries” and sees it as the beginning of a comprehensive security framework involving the cooperation of Muslim nations in West Asia . This statement marks a notable response to the Strategic Mutual Defence Agreement (SMDA), which pledges that an attack on either Saudi Arabia or Pakistan will be considered an attack on both .

During his address, the Iranian President also reiterated Iran’s stance on nuclear weapons, asserting that Iran has never sought and will never seek to build a nuclear bomb . He condemned recent US and Israeli attacks on Iran as a “diplomatic betrayal” and a violation of international law, specifically citing the targeting of Iranian scientists. Furthermore, he labeled Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu a “war criminal” for the conflict in Gaza .
