Iranian President arrives in Lahore to strengthen bilateral ties

LAHORE: Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian arrived in Lahore. It is an official two-day tour aimed at strengthening bilateral relations and expanding trade cooperation between Iran and Pakistan.

The President Masoud Pezeshkian tour was scheduled on 26th July, it was postponed due to unfavorable circumstances. In this sense, this is President Pezeshkian’s first visit to Pakistan since assuming office.  So far, he was warmly received at Lahore airport by former Prime Minister and current Member of National Assembly Nawaz Sharif and Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz.

The visit comes at a time when Pakistan has expressed its desire to play a constructive role in easing tensions between Iran and the United States. In such a scenario, the remarks where Iran’s state news agency IRNA shared by prior to departure, President Pezeshkian underlined Tehran’s goal of boosting annual trade with Pakistan to $10 billion. 

“Our trade relations with Pakistan are good, and this visit will focus on increasing cooperation through land, air, and sea routes,” Pezeshkian said. He focused on the strategic importance of Pakistan in connecting Iran to the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor and the broader Silk Road network reaching into Europe.

The president praised Pakistan’s support during recent regional tensions, particularly in the wake of the Israel-Iran conflict and US attacks on Iranian nuclear facilities.
