Iran urges UN Security Council to enforce nuclear oversight on Israel

TEHRAN: Iran has formally called on the United Nations Security Council to compel Israel to accept international nuclear oversight and adhere to global non-proliferation commitments.

The 15-point letter, addressed to the Security Council, outlines Iran’s position that Israel should be required to join the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) and place its nuclear program under comprehensive international supervision.

Iran focused on that the Security Council has a responsibility to address what it described as Israel’s continued refusal to subject its nuclear activities to global monitoring frameworks.

The letter further called for concrete steps to bring Israel into compliance with international norms governing nuclear weapons and technology.

In this regard, Foreign Minister Araghchi also referred to Israel’s past military actions in the region, including reported strikes on nuclear-related facilities, stating that such actions pose a serious threat to regional peace and stability.

He warned that the absence of oversight increases the risk of escalation and undermines broader efforts aimed at non-proliferation.

The letter comes amid increased tensions in the region, with Iran accusing Israel of aggressive policies that could further destabilize the Middle East.

Iran urged the Security Council to make a clear and unequivocal demand for Israel to renounce possession of nuclear weapons.

The appeal indicates Iran’s broader diplomatic strategy to mention what it views as inconsistencies in the global non-proliferation regime.

There has been no immediate response from Israel or official comment from the Security Council regarding Iran’s request.
