Iran thanks PM Shehbaz, Field Marshal for tireless efforts

ISLAMABAD : In a landmark diplomatic development, Iran has formally announced a two-week ceasefire with the United States, expressing profound gratitude to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Army Chief Field Marshal Asim Munir for their “tireless efforts” to end regional hostilities.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi made the announcement in a tweet on April 7, 2026, speaking on behalf of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council. He confirmed that if attacks against Iran are halted, Iran’s armed forces will cease their defensive operations. Additionally, safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz will be possible for two weeks through coordination with Iran’s military, subject to technical limitations.

Araqchi explicitly linked the decision to “the brotherly request of PM Sharif in his tweet,” as well as to Washington’s request for negotiations based on a 15-point US proposal and the US President’s acceptance of the general framework of Iran’s own 10-point proposal as a basis for talks.

The Iranian minister twice reiterated his country’s appreciation for Pakistan’s leadership, calling Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Field Marshal Munir “my dear brothers.” His statement effectively seals a mutual ceasefire agreement after former US president Donald J. Trump earlier announced he was suspending attacks on Iran at Pakistan’s request.

From Islamabad’s perspective, the development is a crowning achievement of proactive Pakistani diplomacy. Prime Minister Sharif had earlier called for a two-week goodwill ceasefire and urged Iran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz. With Tehran’s formal confirmation, the truce now carries binding commitment from both sides.

Field Marshal Asim Munir’s behind-the-scenes role has been widely praised within Pakistan as crucial in bridging gaps between Washington and Tehran. The joint civilian-military diplomatic push underscores Pakistan’s unique position as an indispensable mediator in the Middle East.
