Iran steps up efforts to ease Pakistan-India strain

ISLAMABAD: Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi is scheduled to visit Pakistan tomorrow for high-level talks with the country’s leadership as part of Tehran’s diplomatic initiative to reduce tensions between Pakistan and India. Following his visit to Pakistan, Araghchi will travel to India to hold meetings with the Indian leadership.

According to the spokesperson of the Iranian Foreign Ministry, the objective of Abbas Araghchi’s visits to Pakistan and India is to help defuse tensions and encourage diplomatic engagement following the Pahalgam incident.

the Iranian Foreign Minister had offered to mediate between Pakistan and India to help ease tensions.

Iranian Vice President Masoud Pezeshkian also held phone conversations with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to discuss easing tensions between Pakistan and India.

On the other hand, the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) has expressed concern over the escalating situation in South Asia.

In his statement, Secretary General of the six-member Arab alliance, Jasem Albudaiwi, emphasized the importance of resolving disputes through peaceful means and urged both Pakistan and India to exercise restraint and begin dialogue without delay.
Two days ago, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif held meetings with the ambassadors of Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and Kuwait.
During the meeting, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif conveyed a message to Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, urging them to play a role in de-escalating tensions.

On the other hand, Pakistan has decided to brief the United Nations about the ongoing tensions with India and India’s hostile actions.

The Foreign Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar have instructed Pakistan’s permanent representative to the United Nations to request a meeting of the UN Security Council on this matter.
