Iran, Saudi Arabia, and Qatar urge restraint amid Afghanistan-Pak border tensions

ISLAMABAD: Iran’s foreign minister Abbas Araghchi, has called on both Afghanistan and Pakistan to “exercise restraint” following recent border clashes between the two neighboring countries.

Araghchi focused on the fact that the importance of maintaining calm and stability in the region.

“Our position is that both sides must exercise restraint,” he said, noting that “stability between the countries contributes to regional stability.”

The appeal from Tehran comes as tensions between Afghanistan and Pakistan have escalated in recent days, with reports of cross-border skirmishes prompting international concern.

Meanwhile, Saudi Arabia also issued a statement expressing deep concern over the renewed violence.

The Saudi Foreign Ministry called for both nations to avoid further escalation and pursue dialogue as a means to resolve their differences peacefully.

“The kingdom calls for restraint, avoiding escalation, and embracing dialogue and wisdom to contribute to reducing tensions and maintaining security and stability in the region,” the statement read.

In this regard, Saudi Arabia’s statements follow the recent signing of a mutual defence cooperation agreement with Pakistan, mentioning the kingdom’s growing role in regional security affairs.

Moreover, Qatar also joined calls for calm, urging both sides to prioritize diplomacy and dialogue over confrontation. In a statement, the Qatari Ministry of Foreign Affairs stressed the need to work towards “containing differences in a manner that helps reduce tension and avoid escalation,” focusing on stability in Afghanistan and Pakistan is essential to broader regional peace.

Meanwhile, the Qatari ministry reasserted its support for all initiatives aimed at strengthening international peace and security. It also confirmed that the Doha’s commitment to promoting stability and prosperity for the people of both countries.

The renewed border clashes have raised alarm among regional powers, who fear that continued hostilities could destabilize an already fragile region.
