WASHINGTON: Iran has suspended negotiations with the United States following President Donald Trump’s stark warning that “a whole civilization will die” if Tehran does not accept a peace deal, The New York Times, citing Iranian officials, reported.
Three senior officials told the paper that Iran informed Pakistan it would no longer participate in ceasefire talks.
Meanwhile, Reuters reported that Tehran has refused to reopen the Strait of Hormuz in exchange for “empty promises.”
The development follows Trump’s earlier threats to Iran, including a warning that an entire civilization would perish if the country did not comply with a U.S.-imposed deadline to reopen the strategic waterway. The President also threatened to target Iranian power plants and civilian infrastructure, dismissing concerns over potential violations of international law.
Trump had repeatedly set and revised deadlines for Iran, escalating tensions in the region as global energy markets monitored the situation closely.
