IndustriALL Global Union director praises Gadani ship-breaking yard's green initiative

GADANI: Walton Pentland, Director for Shipbuilding and Shipbreaking at IndustriALL Global Union, visited Gadani ship-breaking yard on Thursday.

During his visit, he met with several prominent local leaders, including Chairman of the Balochistan Fishermen Cooperative Society Mir Ali Akbar Zehri, Chairman of the Gadani Municipal Committee Jan Sher Baloch, President of the Shipbreaking Workers Union Bashir Ahmed Mehmoodani, and President of the National Trade Union Federation Rafiq Baloch, along with other community dignitaries.

The delegation inspected Shipbreaking Yard No. 71 and praised the ongoing efforts to transform Gadani’s shipbreaking yards into environmentally friendly “Green Yards.”

Pentland commended the steps taken to ensure worker safety, improve labor welfare, and protect the environment.

He also welcomed the Government of Pakistan’s plan to implement the Hong Kong International Convention for the Safe and Environmentally Sound Recycling of Ships (HKC) in June 2025, calling it a major step forward.
