Increase in prices of petroleum products, big news from the court

The recent increase in petroleum prices by the federal government has been challenged in the Lahore High Court, raising concerns over inflation and the growing financial burden on the public.

The petition was filed by Azhar Siddique, head of the Judicial Activism Panel, who argued that petrol and diesel prices in Pakistan have become the highest in the region.

The petitioner maintained that the continuous increase in the Petroleum Development Levy is unconstitutional and has placed additional pressure on citizens already facing economic difficulties.

The rise in petroleum prices is expected to trigger further inflation across the country, affecting transportation costs, essential commodities, and daily living expenses. It stated that the government’s decision would have a direct impact on the common public, particularly low- and middle-income groups.

The petitioner requested the court to declare the recent increase in petroleum prices null and void. The plea also urged the authorities to review the mechanism used for determining fuel prices and taxation on petroleum products.

The challenge comes after the government announced a significant increase in fuel prices. Petrol prices were raised by Rs14.92 per litre, while the price of high-speed diesel was increased by Rs15 per litre.

Meanwhile, the increase in fuel prices has also led to concerns among transporters and traders.

The government reduced the price of kerosene oil, providing limited relief to some consumers. However, economic experts believe the overall impact of the fuel price hike may continue to contribute to inflationary pressure in the coming weeks.

The Lahore High Court is expected to take up the petition for hearing in the coming days. The case has attracted public attention as citizens continue to express concern over rising living costs and economic uncertainty across the country.
