Major crackdown on illegal water connections in Dera Murad Jamali

DERA MURAD JAMALI: Authorities launched a large-scale crackdown against illegal water connections along the 18-inch main pipeline of the Kachhi Plain Water Supply Scheme (Kachhi Canal Project) in Dera Murad Jamali, cutting off hundreds of unauthorised connections to restore clean water supply to nearby areas.

The operation was carried out under the supervision of Executive Engineer Zakir Hussain Jamali, with Sub-Engineer Muhammad Ayub Bhutto, Supervisor Sehnran Khan Joya, and staff from the Public Health Engineering (PHE) Department leading field efforts. Over the past seven to eight days, teams used excavators and heavy labor to disconnect hundreds of illegal water lines along the 25-kilometer pipeline stretching from Dera Murad Jamali to Notal.

Executive Engineer Zakir Hussain Jamali said the crackdown was launched on the special directives of Balochistan’s Secretary for Public Health Engineering (PHE), Muhammad Hashim Ghalzai, following an inspection by Chief Engineer Amir Jan Magsi and Superintendent Engineer PHE Naseerabad, Abdul Jabbar Kakar.

He said the operation began near Pat Feeder Canal in Dera Murad Jamali, targeting illegal water connections installed by influential individuals to supply water to private service stations, petroleum outlets, hotels, and agricultural lands. Authorities removed and confiscated hundreds of unauthorized pipelines ranging from one to four inches in diameter.

Jamali added that legal action is being planned against those involved in setting up illegal connections, damaging the main supply line, and depriving the public of clean drinking water. “FIRs will be registered against individuals responsible for tampering with the main pipeline and illegally diverting water,” he said.

Following the successful operation, water supply has been restored to Notal, Landhi Sharif, Bakhtiarabad, Bhag, and Tangoti.

To prevent future violations, the department has established a strict monitoring mechanism. Three motorcycle-based patrolling teams have been deployed to conduct daily inspections of the pipeline between Dera Murad Jamali, Notal, Landhi Sharif, and Bakhtiarabad.

Jamali said that repair work on the Phase-I pipeline of the Kachhi Water Supply Scheme, which had been out of operation for years due to damage, has also begun.

He reaffirmed the department’s commitment to ensuring uninterrupted access to clean drinking water. “Providing clean water to the public is our responsibility, and we will not tolerate any disruptions in supply,” he stated, adding that all field staff have been directed to strictly perform their duties, with disciplinary action planned against those found negligent or absent.
