ICC Slaps Babar Azam With Fine For Code of Conduct Breach

Pakistan’s star batter Babar Azam was fined 10 percent of his match fee for breaching Level 1 of the ICC Code of Conduct during the third and final ODI against Sri Lanka at the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium

DUBAI: Pakistan’s star batter Babar Azam was fined 10 percent of his match fee for breaching Level 1 of the ICC Code of Conduct during the third and final ODI against Sri Lanka at the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium on Sunday.

The ICC said Babar violated Article 2.2, which covers the abuse of cricket equipment, clothing, ground equipment, or fixtures during an international match.

The match referee also added one demerit point to Babar’s disciplinary record. It is his first offence in the past 24 months.

The incident took place in the 21st over of Pakistan’s innings. After being dismissed, Babar struck the stumps with his bat before leaving the crease.

Babar accepted the charge and the proposed sanction from match referee Ali Naqvi of the Emirates ICC International Panel. No formal hearing was required.

On-field umpires Alex Wharf and Rashid Riaz, third umpire Sharfuddoula Ibne Shahid, and fourth umpire Faisal Afridi reported the offence.

Under ICC rules, Level 1 breaches carry a minimum of an official reprimand and a maximum fine of 50 percent of a player’s match fee, along with one or two demerit points.

The ICC notes that any player who collects four demerit points in a 24-month period faces a suspension. Two suspension points equal a ban of one Test or two limited-overs internationals, whichever comes first.

Demerit points remain on a player’s record for 24 months before being removed.

Yesterday, Islamabad Traffic Police issued a traffic advisory ahead of the T20 Tri-Nations Cricket Series, which begins tomorrow with Pakistan vs Zimbabwe opening match at the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium.

The series will run until November 29.

Police said the movement of cricket teams between Islamabad and Rawalpindi will affect routine traffic flow on match days. Over 300 traffic officials will be deployed for the event.
