How many people are still missing? during the operation rescue in Gul Plaza?

KARACHI: Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab confirmed that, 65 individuals are currently listed as missing. He clarified that while some reports suggest a higher number, the verified figure stands at 65.

The rescue operations near their final phase, troubling questions continue to emerge following the deadly incident at a commercial plaza in Karachi, where dozens of people remain unaccounted for and the full scale of the tragedy is still unfolding.

In such a case, the unofficial numbers are 77 missing, but I can confirm that it is 65, ‘’the mayor said. He added that rescue teams have so far recovered and identified 18 bodies.

In addition, several bodies have also been recovered, he said, but their identities have not yet been confirmed. ‘’We are waiting on DNA results,’’ Wahab noted, indicating that the identification process is still ongoing.

So far, as per the Mayor, the firefighting efforts at the site have been completed, and cooling operations are now underway to stabilise the structure and allow safer access.

He explained that rescue workers have managed to reach three sections of the building, two areas where parts of the structure remain standing, and one rear portion that collapsed during the incident.

In addition, Wahab revealed that until the last night, rescue teams had received reports suggesting possible movement beneath the debris. However, when those specific areas were accessed, no signs of life were found. In light of this, rescue personnel have been instructed to proceed with extreme caution, specifically while drilling, to avoid further risk.
