Heavy Rains Kill Nine, Injure Dozens in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa

PESHAWAR: At least nine people, including eight children, have died and 47 others were injured in rain-related incidents in northwest Pakistan since March 25, authorities said Monday.

Intermittent rainfall continues across parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa by heavy rain in districts such as Bannu and North Waziristan, according to the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA).

Pakistan is highly vulnerable to climate change and has faced increasingly erratic weather in recent years, including extreme rainfall, floods, and heatwaves. Weak infrastructure and gaps in disaster preparedness have worsened the impact.

In 2022, unprecedented monsoon rains caused catastrophic floods that killed over 1,700 people and affected more than 33 million nationwide. Heavy monsoon rains in 2025 again led to widespread flooding, killing over 900 people and severely affecting Punjab, submerging millions of acres of farmland and damaging livelihoods.

“So far, nine people have died and 47 injured due to collapsed roofs and walls,” the PDMA said. Of the dead, eight were children and one a woman. Among the injured were 26 men and 21 children. At least six houses sustained partial damage in the affected districts.

The PDMA said it was coordinating with Rescue 1122, district administrations, and other agencies to carry out relief operations. Authorities have instructed local administrations to accelerate assistance, with Bannu identified as the worst-hit district.

Intermittent rain is expected to continue until Tuesday. The PDMA urged residents to avoid unnecessary travel, stay away from vulnerable tourist areas, and follow official advisories.
