Heavy rains cause urban flooding in Peshawar, multiple areas submerged

PESHAWAR: Torrential and heavy rainfall in Peshawar and its surrounding areas has caused severe urban flooding, submerging many parts of the city, on Saturday.

According to reports, due to torrential rains, roads in Peshawar city and neighboring localities have turned into pools of water. Areas including GT Road, Ashraf Road, Kohati, Hashtnagri, Sikandarpura, Gilahar, Warsak Road, Nasir Bagh Road, and Rehgi Model Town have been particularly affected.

The highest rainfall was recorded in Chirat with 165 millimeters, while Peshawar city received 41 millimeters and the airport area saw 35 millimeters of rain. Meteorologists have issued warnings that heavy rains are likely to continue across the province until September 3rd or 4th.

Meanwhile, Director General PDMA Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Asfandiar Khattak, visited the affected areas and assured the local residents of full support. According to a report from PDMA, the DG reviewed ongoing rescue and drainage operations, overseeing clearance and relief efforts in the flood-hit localities.

The PDMA spokesperson said over 50 dewatering pumps and machinery have been deployed at various locations to remove water from affected areas. Relevant departments and district administrations are working diligently to expedite the drainage process.

Furthermore, the spokesperson added that DG Rescue and DG PDMA are jointly monitoring relief activities to ensure timely assistance reaches the citizens.
