Gwadar: Border Corridor System with Iran abruptly shut down

GWADAR:  In a sudden move that is expected to sever a vital link for cross-border communities, the district administration of Gwadar has announced the immediate closure of the corridor system facilitating travel to Iran.

According to a notification issued by the Assistant Commissioner of Gwadar, the special corridor system has been terminated with immediate effect. “No person will be issued a corridor to go to Iran,” the order stated, signaling a complete halt to the facilitative measure.

The corridor system was a long-standing administrative arrangement that allowed residents living in the border regions of Pakistan and Iran to travel between the two countries without the need for visas or passports. Officials confirmed that this facility was strictly reserved for people residing in the designated border areas of both nations, simplifying movement for trade, family visits, and cultural exchanges.

The abrupt closure has sparked concern among local populations. Public circles in the border areas expressed deep dismay over the decision, highlighting the profound impact it will have on daily life.

“After the closure of the corridor system, people living on both sides of the border will face immense difficulties in meeting each other,” residents and community leaders said. The system is seen as crucial for maintaining familial and social ties that predate the modern border, and its termination is feared to isolate communities that have long been interconnected.

Authorities have not yet provided a reason for the immediate termination of the corridor system.
