ISLAMABAD: Minister for Defence Khawaja Muhammad Asif on Tuesday assured the National Assembly that the government is taking all necessary steps to facilitate Shia pilgrims traveling to Iran and Iraq for Arbaeen.
Addressing the National Assembly, he emphasized that ensuring the safety and convenience of pilgrims remains the government’s top priority. He said the relevant departments have received clear instructions to make seamless arrangements throughout the journey.
He informed the House that the government restricted overland travel along the 800-kilometre route from Quetta due to serious security threats, especially the risk of terrorist attacks targeting pilgrim convoys. To mitigate this threat, the federal government authorized the Balochistan government to operate direct flights from Quetta, enabling pilgrims to travel safely by air.
The minister noted that one such flight had already taken off, and the government is pushing for more flights—either two per day or at least one regular service—to meet growing demand. He added that authorities have also arranged onward transportation from airports in Iran and Iraq to the pilgrims’ destinations.
He said the government published advertisements over the past four days, inviting private airlines to operate on this route. All licensed private carriers have received approval to provide services, including chartered flights, to maximize the number of pilgrims traveling safely.
Khawaja Asif said these measures aim to provide maximum facilities while avoiding the dangers of road travel. He encouraged private operators and market players to take full advantage of the permissions granted.

He further stated that during the recent visit of the Iranian president to Pakistan, both countries discussed the issue, and Iran granted an additional flight to accommodate Pakistani pilgrims. “I assure the House and the people of Pakistan that the government is fully committed to providing safe, comfortable, and timely transportation for all Arbaeen pilgrims,” he added.
