ISLAMABAD: In a move that is expected to add to the financial burden of citizens, the government has increased the prices of petroleum products. The new prices, which take effect immediately, were announced through a notification issued by the Petroleum Division on Sunday.
According to the notification, the price of petrol has been increased by Rs 5 per liter. The new price of petrol is now fixed at Rs 258.17.
In a more significant increase, the price of high-speed diesel (HSD) has been hiked by Rs 7.32 per liter, bringing its new price to Rs 275.70.
The price revision is part of the government’s fortnightly review of fuel prices, which are influenced by fluctuations in the global oil market and currency exchange rates. The increase in diesel prices is particularly concerning as it is widely used for public transport and the haulage of goods, and is expected to lead to a rise in the prices of essential commodities across the country.
