Govt decides to end fuel subsidy nationwide following decline in global oil prices

ISLAMABAD: The federal government has decided to discontinue the fuel subsidy program across the country following a decline in international fuel prices and with the approval of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.

In this regard, the decision was taken during the seventh meeting of the National Steering Committee, chaired by Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar.

The meeting reviewed the progress and effectiveness of the fuel subsidy program that had been introduced to provide relief to motorcycle riders, small-scale farmers, and public as well as goods transport operators.

The committee examined various aspects of the subsidy initiative and discussed its impact on different sectors of society. Following detailed deliberations, it was agreed that the subsidy program would be discontinued in all provinces, as well as in Gilgit-Baltistan and Azad Jammu and Kashmir, after receiving the Prime Minister’s approval.

During the meeting, participants also discussed measures aimed at improving public service delivery and enhancing the efficiency of administrative systems. Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar directed the relevant authorities to address shortcomings in data management and delivery mechanisms to ensure that government services are provided more effectively and transparently.

The fuel subsidy program had been designed to support vulnerable groups affected by rising fuel costs, particularly low-income motorcycle users, small farmers, and transport operators.

The latest decision indicates the government’s broader approach of adjusting economic support measures in accordance with changing market conditions while focusing on improving the efficiency of public services and resource management across the country.
