GDA launches two modern fishing jetties to empower fisherfolk

ISLAMABAD: Fishing at newly developed coastal facilities is directly improving the livelihoods of local communities, as two modern jetties in Surbandar and Pishukan—built by the Gwadar Development Authority (GDA)—have recently become operational.

These state-of-the-art jetties now allow fishermen to unload their daily catch free of charge, saving millions of rupees and significantly reducing their operational costs, Gwadar Pro reported on Monday.

In a statement, GDA emphasized that this initiative not only supports local fishermen but also drives job creation, business growth, and overall economic activity in the region.

This development represents a major step toward strengthening Gwadar’s coastal economy and advancing Pakistan’s national blue economy agenda.

Supporting these efforts, both the federal and Balochistan provincial governments have allocated funds under the Public Sector Development Programme (PSDP) 2025–26 to boost fisheries and support fisherfolk.

For the current fiscal year, the Balochistan government has earmarked Rs22.334 million for fisheries-related initiatives.

One major initiative, “Basic Infrastructure Development for the Balochistan Fisheries Department,” has already utilized Rs35 million, with an additional Rs13 million allocated under PSDP 2025–26.

To reduce operational downtime and improve vessel maintenance, the Balochistan government also launched a Rs300 million project titled “Establishment of Boat Repairing Workshop and Provision of Boat Engine Spare Parts on Subsidized Rates.” It has received Rs10 million under the current PSDP.
