WASHINGTON: The report published by the US magazine Foreign Policy outlines what it describes as an important developments in relations between Pakistan and the United States President Donald Trump’s tenure.
In this regard, as per the report, Islamabad’s diplomatic outreach during that period enabled Pakistan to secure what the publication terms an unusually strong position in Washington.
The report states that during the Trump administration, Pakistan demonstrated “exceptional diplomacy,” which, in the magazine’s assessment, helped elevate bilateral engagement to one of its most influential phases in recent years.
It claims that President Trump developed a “historic level of proximity” with Pakistan’s current Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Chief of Army Staff General Asim Munir, whom the report refers to as holding “field marshal-level influence.”
In this sense, as per the Foreign Policy, Pakistan’s role in facilitating the arrest of the alleged mastermind behind an attack in Kabul proved decisive in building Trump’s confidence in Islamabad.
The publication argues that this cooperation reinforced Washington’s perception of Pakistan as a key security partner and helped reset the bilateral equation on a more favorable footing for Islamabad.
The report further notes that the revival of the Reko Diq mining project sent a strong message to global investors, portraying Pakistan as a reliable partner for Western capital.
It adds that Islamabad’s introduction of what it describes as a transparent and modern crypto regulatory framework contributed to accelerating cooperation with the Trump administration.
Furthermore, Foreign Policy states that Trump publicly acknowledged Pakistan’s role in easing tensions with India, particularly during moments of heightened cross-border friction. The report claims that the US stance during this period appeared “cool toward New Delhi and warm toward Islamabad,” which the magazine interprets as evidence of Pakistan’s successful diplomatic engagement.
The report also mentions Islamabad’s message to Washington that bilateral ties must stand on their own merit rather than being shaped by relations with any third country.
It notes that Trump viewed Pakistan as an essential pillar of his Middle East strategy, especially with respect to regional stability. It adds that Washington’s tone toward Pakistan is becoming “less critical and more trusting,” which the magazine attributes to Islamabad’s sustained diplomatic efforts.
The report concludes that cooperation between the two countries in areas such as cryptocurrency regulation, energy, counterterrorism, and minerals appears to be expanding, supported by what it describes as Pakistan’s effective blend of leadership, vision, and strategic diplomacy.
