Cloudburst-triggered floods sweep away 15 people in Swabi

SWABI: A devastating cloudburst struck Dalori village in the Swabi district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Floodwaters swept away many people, while several deaths were reported.

More than 15 people were swept away in the flash flood triggered by the cloudburst, said Swabi Deputy Commissioner Nasrullah Khan. He said that several houses were submerged. Landslides also occurred in different locations due to the hilly terrain, which created obstacles for relief efforts.

Rescue and administration teams were dispatched to the site. Additional rescue teams from Haripur and Mardan were called in to assist.

Provincial Situation

According to a report issued by the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) on Sunday, at least 314 people have been killed across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa due to heavy rains and sudden flash floods. Another 156 were injured.

The report stated that the dead included 264 men, 29 women, and 21 children. The injured comprised 124 men, 23 women, and 10 children. At least 159 houses were damaged, of which 97 were partially and 62 were completely destroyed.

Buner district was reported as the worst-hit, with 209 deaths. Other badly affected districts included Swat, Bajaur, Torghar, Mansehra, Shangla, and Battagram. The PDMA directed that rescue and relief operations must be accelerated in all affected areas.

CM’s Assurance

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur said the government’s current focus remained on ongoing rescue operations. Several roads had been restored, though some remained blocked. Support from aviation resources was sought, and priority was being given to road clearance.

The Chief Minister assured that all damages would be fully compensated. He stated that while the loss of life could not be replaced, complete compensation would be given for destroyed homes and financial losses.

According to Gandapur, solidarity was expressed by chief ministers of other provinces through phone calls. Coordination with the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) was confirmed, and further assistance would be provided if needed.

The Chief Minister emphasized that there was no shortage of resources. Once all roads were cleared and data was finalized, victims would be assisted to stand on their feet again. He added that while federal support was a provincial right, the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government had enough resources to cover 100% of the damages.
