ISLAMABAD: Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar on Tuesday highlighted Pakistan’s critical role in reducing tensions in the Middle East. He credited Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir for leading diplomatic efforts.
Speaking in the Senate, Dar recalled that when the attack on Iran occurred, he was in Madinah. From there, he instructed Pakistan to immediately condemn the strikes. Pakistan became the first Muslim country to officially denounce the attacks.
He added that Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi was contacted shortly after the strikes. Within three to four hours, however, attacks had expanded to neighboring countries.
“Pakistan is acting as a mediator, though detailed discussions cannot be disclosed at this stage,” Dar said.
He emphasized the significance of Sharif and Field Marshal Munir’s leadership during this crisis.
Dar noted that on the night of March 19, hours of talks were held between foreign ministers. Initially, 12 countries participated, followed by a Group of Four meeting.
The Group of Four session was initially scheduled for March 28 in Istanbul. After negotiations, it was moved to Islamabad, where both warring sides agreed to engage in talks.
China later joined the mediation efforts. Dar personally consulted with China’s Foreign Minister in Beijing to discuss the situation.
Pakistan’s efforts helped secure an initial six-day and later a two-day extension for negotiations, which expired today.
Dar said progress had been positive until recently, when Israel struck Iran. Iran then retaliated by targeting Saudi oil facilities.
He stressed that Pakistan continues to work to stabilize the situation and hopes for de-escalation. “Prayers are needed that conditions improve,” he said.
