Field Marshal Asim Munir Drives US-Iran Talks to Final Phase: US Media

ISLAMABAD: US television network CBS News has claimed that Pakistan’s Chief of Army Staff Field Marshal Asim Munir enjoys the trust of both the United States and Iran and played a key role in advancing Iran-US negotiations to the final stage.

According to the report, Field Marshal Asim Munir’s recent visit to Tehran created major progress in ongoing diplomatic efforts.

CBS News said the current Middle East situation involves Gulf countries and Lebanon as part of the wider regional tensions. However, the report claimed Pakistan emerged as the only country able to help finalize the draft of the proposed agreement.

The report said negotiators sent the draft agreement to the Iranian and US leadership for review after Munir returned from Tehran.

CBS News also claimed close coordination between Pakistan’s political and military leadership remained the most important factor behind the mediation process.

The report said US President Donald Trump had previously referred to Asim Munir as “my favorite field marshal.”

According to the report, Pakistan’s government and military leadership also played an effective role in reducing tensions during talks held in Islamabad.

CBS News added that Pakistan has historically helped facilitate major international diplomatic contacts, particularly during efforts to restore relations between the United States and China.
