Field Marshal Asim Munir Intensive Diplomacy Raises Hopes of Hormuz Reopening

ISLAMABAD: Field Marshal-led diplomacy has gained momentum, proposing the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz alongside an immediate ceasefire to defuse tensions between Iran and the United States.

Pakistan has proposed a two-phase peace plan aimed at easing tensions between the two sides, sources said. The plan calls for an immediate ceasefire followed by negotiations on a comprehensive and lasting agreement. However, no party has formally approved the proposal so far.

Officials say Pakistan’s diplomatic efforts have entered a critical phase. The framework has been shared with both sides and could be implemented as early as Monday if consensus is reached.

According to Reuters, Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir led intensive overnight diplomacy. He held direct contacts with US Vice President JD Vance and Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi.

A source familiar with the matter said the proposal could secure an immediate ceasefire and help restore maritime flows through the Strait of Hormuz. The plan includes two stages: a ceasefire and a broader peace agreement.

Sources said all key points must be agreed upon quickly. The initial understanding may be formalized as a memorandum of understanding and finalized electronically through Pakistan, which is acting as the main intermediary.

Axios reported that the United States, Iran, and regional mediators are considering a two-stage deal that includes a 45-day ceasefire. The report cited U.S., Israeli, and regional sources.

Officials said Munir also remained in contact with U.S. envoy Steve Witkoff during the diplomatic push. The proposal suggests reopening the Strait of Hormuz alongside the ceasefire and setting a 15–20 day timeline to finalize a broader agreement.

The proposed deal has been informally dubbed the “Islamabad Accord.” Final face-to-face talks are expected to take place in Islamabad if the framework moves forward.
