QUETTA: The Serious Crimes Investigation Wing (SCIW) has arrested the prime suspect involved in the murder of school teacher Maryam Shahwani after an armed encounter in which the accused was injured.
According to police officials, the detained suspect, Owais son of Musa Muhammad Hasni, was wanted in the murder case of 17-year-old teacher Maryam Shahwani, who was shot dead on October 16 near her home on Manojan Road by two motorcycle riders.
Following the registration of the case at the Sadar Police Station, the investigation was handed over to the SCIW for further probe. Acting on the directives of SSP Imran Qureshi, a special investigation team was formed that used advanced investigative techniques, technology, and CCTV footage to identify the culprits.
During the initial phase of the investigation, one suspect, Muhammad Jahanzeb son of Muhammad Hanif, was arrested. Police continued raids at multiple locations to capture the main absconder, Owais.
Last night, acting on a tip-off about Owais’s presence in Killi Barat, police launched an operation. During the raid, Owais and his accomplice opened fire on the police. In the exchange of fire, Owais was injured by a bullet fired by his own accomplice, who managed to flee the scene. Police arrested the injured suspect and shifted him to Civil Hospital Quetta for treatment.
Officials said the operation to arrest the fugitive accomplice is ongoing.
Public circles have praised the police for their timely action, saying that if law enforcement agencies continue to perform with such determination, the crime rate in the city could significantly decline.
Adviser to the Chief Minister of Balochistan on Women Development, Dr. Rubaba Khan Buledi, has stated that the development of a society is impossible without empowering women. She emphasised that true social and economic stability can only be achieved by providing women opportunities to progress according to their capabilities.
