Shaheed Azhar Mehmood becomes first FC soldier nominated for Hilal-e-Shujaat

PESHAWAR: In a historic move, the President of Pakistan has approved the prestigious Hilal-e-Shujaat for 20-year-old Sepoy Azhar Mehmood of the Frontier Corps (FC), marking the first time an FC soldier has received this high civilian gallantry award.

Sepoy Azhar Mehmood laid down his life during a fierce encounter with suicide attackers at Bannu Cantt in March. Displaying extraordinary courage, he stood firm against the assailants, blocking their advance and shielding his comrades. A rocket launcher eventually struck him, but not before he saved countless lives with his selfless act.

Breaking tradition, the government has now extended top national honors beyond commissioned officers to include FC soldiers—recognizing sacrifice over rank. Sepoy Azhar Mehmood’s posthumous award signals a new era where valor and character take precedence over titles.

In addition to Mehmood’s honor, the President has also announced Sitara-e-Shujaat for 19 other martyred FC personnel. Among them are Sepoy Mushtaq Ahmed and Sepoy Abdul Samid, who fought terrorists for two hours in the Darazinda region.

The state will also award the Tamgha-e-Shujaat to five injured FC soldiers who sustained wounds in the line of duty.

FC Commandant confirmed that the formal announcement of these awards will take place on August 14, Pakistan’s Independence Day.

These honors serve not merely as medals, but as a powerful national acknowledgment of the real defenders of Pakistan—those who choose duty over fear, and sacrifice over safety.
