Fake news of Pakistan's Army internal rift, stressed unity, regional tensions

QUETTA: One of the baseless rumors circulating on social media platforms suggests a heated exchange between Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Asim Munir and Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee (CJCSC) General Sahir Shamshad Mirza.

The fabricated story, initially posted by a notorious X account known as “Baba Banaras,” has been identified as part of an ongoing misinformation campaign aimed at sowing discord within Pakistan’s senior military leadership.

The false narrative emerged following big regional tensions after the Pahalgam attack in Indian-occupied Kashmir.

In this regard, Baba Banaras, widely recognized for disseminating false information and promoting anti-Pakistan narratives, has been linked to previous incidents of fake news aimed at stirring confusion and mistrust.

Furthermore, experts in strategic communication have pointed out that these attempts are a hallmark of hybrid warfare, where hostile actors seek to exploit social media platforms to create divisions within state institutions.

The Pakistan Army has consistently demonstrated a high level of professionalism and internal cohesion, attributes that have long been recognized both nationally and internationally.

Meanwhile, regional dynamics continue to evolve following the Pahalgam incident, and Pakistan’s armed forces remain vigilant and focused on preserving peace, security, and sovereignty.
