ISLAMABAD: Senator Faisal Vawda on Thursday reacted to the 14-year imprisonment awarded to former ISI chief Lt. Gen. (Retd) Faiz Hameed, saying the verdict proved that “no one is above Pakistan” and that the cases of May 9 were still pending.
Speaking on a private news channel, Vawda said his earlier prediction had “come true,” noting that Faiz Hameed had not received a death sentence but a 14-year jail term.
He said the judgments in the May 9 cases were still awaited. He accused those involved of causing destruction, damaging state institutions, judiciary, democracy, and attempting to influence the media.
Vawda said the verdict showed that Pakistan’s institutions had set a clear precedent for accountability. “The system of reward and punishment has now been established,” he added.
He said the May 9 trials were still under way and carry a minimum punishment of 14 years. He alleged that the political party involved, referring to PTI, and its founder had misled people and pushed supporters into violence that targeted institutions, martyrs, and national monuments.
Vawda noted that even the trial of “their own man” was not stopped, something he said had never happened before in the country’s history. He credited Army Chief General Asim Munir for initiating a strict accountability process from within the institution.
