Energy projects approved for Gwadar and Gilgit-Baltistan

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif chaired an important meeting on ongoing power sector reforms and development projects, during which new energy projects for Gwadar and Gilgit-Baltistan were approved.

The Prime Minister directed authorities to immediately implement a comprehensive strategy to ensure uninterrupted, reliable, and affordable electricity for Gwadar Port City.

He emphasized that all concerned departments must work in complete coordination to ensure timely completion of these projects, stating that a strong energy infrastructure in Gwadar will play a crucial role in boosting economic activity and investment in the region.

The Prime Minister also approved the immediate execution of a 100 MW solar project for Gilgit-Baltistan, stating that the initiative will provide the region with environment-friendly, stable, and uninterrupted power supply.

He added that the federal government is taking every possible step for the welfare, industrial growth, and investment promotion of the people of Gilgit-Baltistan.

Discussing power sector reforms, the Prime Minister appreciated the recommendations presented by the Ministry of Energy and the committee led by Ahsan Iqbal, directing effective implementation of short-, medium-, and long-term plans.

During the briefing, it was shared that electricity disruptions in Gwadar have already been reduced by 42%, and a detailed plan is ready to stabilize voltage within the next six months. Solar projects worth 9.7 MW will be completed in 8 to 12 months, while a 40 MW power plant will be set up under long-term plans.

Due to industrial growth, Gwadar’s electricity demand is expected to rise by 30% in the coming years.

The 100 MW solar project includes 18 MW rooftop systems and 82 MW utility-scale systems, which will save the government one billion rupees annually.

The Gilgit-Baltistan government will provide land, infrastructure, and other required facilities on time.

The Prime Minister expressed confidence that the completion of these key power projects will not only improve the energy sector but also help transform Gwadar Port into one of the world’s leading ports and a major hub for regional economic activity.
