Houston: The crew of NASA’s Artemis 2 mission has shared stunning images and videos of Earth rising and setting from behind the Moon.
Mission commander Reid Wiseman posted an incredible video of the moment, showing Earth briefly disappearing behind the lunar surface.
While astronaut Christina Koch captured high-quality still images of the Earth setting using a digital camera, Wiseman recorded the moment using an iPhone 17 Pro Max.
He shared the video on X (formerly Twitter), noting that he could barely see Earth slipping behind the Moon through the Orion spacecraft window, but the iPhone managed to capture the scene remarkably well.
Only one chance in this lifetime…
Like watching sunset at the beach from the most foreign seat in the cosmos, I couldn’t resist a cell phone video of Earthset. You can hear the shutter on the Nikon as @Astro_Christina is hammering away on 3-shot brackets and capturing those… pic.twitter.com/8aWnaFJ69c

He used the phone’s 8x optical zoom and posted the footage without editing.
This marks the first time in 54 years that humans have visually witnessed Earth setting from the Moon’s perspective.
The Artemis 2 crew traveled about 5,000 miles around the far side of the Moon and covered more than 250,000 miles in total from Earth.
