ISLAMABAD: Five moderate earthquakes have struck Pakistan’s southwestern province of Balochistan since Friday, including a magnitude 5.2 tremor that hit Barkhan and nearby areas on Saturday morning, the country’s chief meteorologist said.
Chief Meteorologist Amir Haider Laghari said Balochistan and neighbouring Khyber Pakhtunkhwa lie on the Eurasian tectonic plate, where seismic activity is common.
He said the recent earthquakes originated in the upper section of the plate and were linked to broader global seismic activity.
According to Laghari, seismic energy generated by a powerful earthquake in Venezuela has propagated through connected tectonic plates, contributing to tremors in the region.
He cited previous examples of long-range seismic activity, noting that major earthquakes in Indonesia between 2000 and 2011 were followed by the devastating 2005 Kashmir earthquake.
Laghari said more earthquakes could occur until the accumulated seismic energy dissipates. However, he stressed that science cannot accurately predict the exact timing or magnitude of future earthquakes.
