MINNEAPOLIS : Top Democratic leaders launched a scathing attack on the Trump administration’s policy toward Iran during a rally in Minnesota on Saturday, demanding an immediate cessation of military action and accusing the President of abusing his power.
Speaking to a crowd of supporters at the “Knockings” rally, Senator Bernie Sanders characterized the ongoing conflict as an “unjustified war” that violates international law. Sanders leveled sharp criticism at President Trump, arguing that the executive branch has overstepped its constitutional bounds.
“One man has taken the law of the country into his own hands,” Sanders declared. He drew a direct line between the current situation and the lead-up to the Iraq War, asserting that the American public is being deceived once again. “We were lied to about the Iraq war. Today we are being lied to about the war against Iran.”
The Senator warned against the centralization of power, stating, “We do not want a monarchy. There is no room for a monarchy in America.” He accused the President of manufacturing a crisis, claiming that Trump is “putting the whole world in crisis” and has misused power to a degree unprecedented in American history.
Representative Ilhan Omar, a member of the Democratic Party leadership, echoed Sanders’s remarks while highlighting the human toll of the conflict. Omar stated that schoolgirls have been killed as a result of bombings in Iran, framing the violence as a consequence of the administration’s policies.
Omar also questioned the President’s political motives, suggesting that the escalation abroad is linked to domestic political anxieties. “Trump has now understood that he will not win the election transparently,” Omar said, contrasting the President’s current actions with his previous campaign rhetoric. She noted that President Trump had previously declared himself to be against wars during his election campaign.
The rally in Minnesota reflects growing frustration among Democratic leaders regarding the administration’s foreign policy and their urgent call for a de-escalation of military engagement in the Middle East.
