QUETTA: The death toll from last week’s Nushki oil tanker explosion jumped to 20, officials said on Tuesday.
The blast occurred on April 28 in Nushki, a town in Balochistan province, after an oil tanker caught fire near a local market. Witnesses said that the driver had moved the truck away from the bus and truck stand to a more isolated area. However, a crowd had gathered around the vehicle in an attempt to extinguish the flames when it exploded.
As a result, one person died on the spot while 40 others were injured in the blast, many of whom suffered severe burns. Several victims were transported to Karachi for treatment due to the lack of specialised medical facilities in the province.
Of these 20 injured has so far succumbed to injuries.
Yesterday, Inspector General North Major General Abid Mazhar visited Nushki to express condolences to the families of the victims of the oil tanker tragedy.
He met the families of those who lost their lives and prayed for the swift recovery of the injured.
Calling it a major tragedy, Major General Mazhar assured that FC stands firmly with the people during this difficult time. He promised maximum financial support for the victims.
The IG praised the courage and bravery shown by the people of Nushki. “FC is a force dedicated to serving the public,” he said during his address at a local event.
He also stated that the injured receiving treatment in Karachi and Quetta will be provided with the best medical facilities.
