Kabul: The death toll from the earthquake that struck eastern Afghanistan has risen to 800, according to a spokesperson for the Afghan government.
More than 2,800 people have been reported injured.
Reports state that a 6.0-magnitude earthquake struck last night at 11:47 p.m. local time, followed about 20 minutes later by another tremor of 4.5 magnitude in the same province, at a depth of 10 kilometers.
The U.S. Geological Survey confirmed that the earthquake measured 6.0 in magnitude, with its epicenter located 27 kilometers east of Jalalabad city in Nangarhar province, at a depth of 8 kilometers.
Afghan officials said that the most severe destruction occurred in Kunar province, where hundreds of lives were lost and thousands injured.
Rescue operations are still underway as many remain trapped under the rubble.
It is worth noting that tremors were also felt in several cities of Pakistan last night, but no casualties or damage were reported.
According to the Seismological Center, aftershocks of 4.6 magnitude were recorded at 12:38 a.m. in Hangu, Malakand, Swat, Mansehra, Abbottabad, Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Chitral, and Peshawar.

The aftershocks were recorded at a depth of 15 kilometers, with the epicenter located in southeastern Afghanistan.
