ISLAMABAD: Khawaja Asif made pointed remarks about alleged backchannel contacts with the founder of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), dismissing widespread speculation of any political “deal” as an attempt to keep a fading narrative alive.
The defense minister said that while contact may have been made regarding “facilities,” rumors circulating in the political market about a broader deal were unfounded.
“Nothing substantial remains with this product,” he said, adding that repeated references to negotiations were aimed at keeping a political shop open.
The minister claimed that the province’s chief minister was facing threats to his position and had announced the formation of a so-called “Release Force” to safeguard his political future.
“No one other than the federation has the authority to establish a force,” he asserted, calling the announcement a serious legal matter.
The statement has triggered fresh debate over provincial powers and constitutional boundaries.
Khawaja Asif mentioned international acknowledgment of Pakistan’s leadership. He said that US President Donald Trump had praised Pakistan’s political and military leadership during an international gathering, recognizing the capabilities of the Pakistan Army and the leadership of its field marshal.
The defense minister further described Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s recent visit to the United States as “positive and beneficial” for the country, indicating improved diplomatic engagement.
However, as political temperatures continue to rise at home, key questions remain unanswered.
