LOWER DIR; Unknown gunmen opened fire at the home of national cricket team fast bowler Naseem Shah in Lower Dir, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, police said Monday.
The attack occurred at Shah’s residence in Mayar. The assailants targeted the main gate, windows, and a parked vehicle. Police arrived quickly, but the suspects escaped.
“Unidentified assailants opened fire at the residence of Naseem Shah,” a police spokesperson said. “The firing damaged the main gate, windows, and a vehicle. Police have taken five suspects into custody. A case has been registered at Mayar Police Station. Further action is underway to arrest those involved.”
Authorities are investigating the motive behind the attack.
Shah, 22, is one of Pakistan’s most promising fast bowlers. Born February 15, 2003, in Mayar, Lower Dir, he rose through domestic cricket ranks before making his international debut. He played his first Test in November 2019 against Australia and has since featured in Pakistan’s ODI and T20 squads.
Early in his career, Shah became the second-youngest Pakistani bowler to take a five-wicket haul in a Test, achieving the feat against Sri Lanka. Known for his pace and swing, he is a key member of Pakistan’s pace attack.
Police said the investigation is ongoing. “Mayar Police Station has registered a case. Further action is underway to arrest those involved,” the spokesperson added.

The attack highlights security concerns for high-profile sports figures in Pakistan. Authorities are reviewing security measures to prevent similar incidents. Shah continues to play for Pakistan in domestic and international matches.
