Lahore: Punjab Chief Minister orders arrest of five officers following Bhati Gate tragedy
Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has directed the immediate arrest and dismissal from service of five senior officials in connection with the tragic incident in which a mother and her young daughter fell into an open sewer line near Data Darbar and died.
During a briefing on the Bhati Gate sewage line incident, the Chief Minister held the following officials responsible and ordered their arrest and termination:
She also instructed that the contractor involved be required to pay Rs10 million (one crore) in compensation to the affected family.
Maryam Nawaz strongly criticized attempts by the affected family members to downplay or label news of the arrests as “fake.”
She emphasized that the tragedy occurred in Lahore, not in remote districts like Layyah or Rajanpur and questioned how long it takes for the Safe City Project and CCTV footage to be reviewed.
She remarked that district administration cannot excuse delays by claiming they were busy with other tasks.
The Chief Minister has also directed the Inspector General of Police (IGP) to submit an immediate report on the matter.
