China, Russia Veto UN Resolution to Guard Hormuz Shipping

UNITED NATIONS: China and Russia on Tuesday vetoed a UN Security Council draft resolution aimed at authorizing “all defensive means necessary” to protect commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz.

The Bahrain-led resolution fell short despite receiving 11 votes in favor, with Pakistan and Colombia abstaining.

The resolution had called on nations using the Strait to coordinate defensive measures, including escorting merchant vessels. It demands that Iran immediately cease attacks on commercial ships and civilian infrastructure, including oil, gas, and water installations.

The United States, Bahrain, DR Congo, Denmark, Greece, Latvia, Liberia, France, Panama, Somalia, and United Kingdom voted in favour of the resolution.
