QUETTA: The Balochistan National Party (BNP) has strongly condemned the provincial government’s decision to merge the Balochistan Levies Force with the police.
In an official statement, the party criticised the move, arguing that the Levies Force has played a vital and effective role in controlling crime and maintaining law and order in the province. The party’s statement recalled that a similar merger was attempted in 2003, which it described as an “anti-people decision” whose negative consequences are still felt today.
The BNP alleged that the current government, which it claims came to power through a disputed mandate, is now repeating the policies of the past. It warned that absorbing the Levies into the police force poses a threat to local tribal values and the respected traditions of the Baloch and Pashtun communities.
The party dismissed the government’s justification that the merger is for improving security. It stated that the law and order situation has historically deteriorated under such structures and has not yielded positive long-term results.
Instead of merging the forces, the BNP demanded that the government withdraw its orders. It called for the Levies Force to be modernised and strengthened, describing it as aninstitution that reflects the positive traditions of Balochistan and is crucial for genuine peace.
