Balochistan to launch electric shuttle service in Quetta

QUETTA: The Government of Balochistan is set to launch an electric vehicle (EV) shuttle service in Quetta’s busy downtown area. The initiative was discussed in a high-level meeting held under the chairmanship of the Secretary of Transport, Hayat Kakar/

The meeting focused on plans to operate electric shuttles across key downtown locations, including Liaquat Bazaar, Kandahari Bazaar, Jinnah Road, and Suraj Ganj Bazaar. These congested commercial hubs often witness traffic chaos and parking issues, making sustainable transit solutions a pressing need.

Officials briefed the meeting that the Quetta Metropolitan Corporation has officially notified the downtown area as a No Parking Zone, paving the way for the launch of a dedicated electric shuttle service to ease mobility and reduce environmental pollution.

According to Secretary of Transport Hayat Kakar, the government’s vision is to provide modern, eco-friendly, and comfortable transportation for citizens. The electric shuttle service is designed to enhance the commuting experience of shoppers, workers, and visitors to the commercial heart of the city.

In its initial phase, electric vehicles will be deployed on three dedicated two-way routes that will cover the main zones of downtown Quetta. A limited number of EVs will operate at the outset, with plans to expand the fleet based on public demand and route performance.

This project is seen as a pioneering step toward sustainable urban transport in Balochistan. Not only is it expected to cut down emissions and traffic congestion, but it also aligns with the province’s broader goal of improving the quality of life in urban centers.

Further announcements regarding the project’s launch timeline, fare structure, and operational hours are expected in the coming weeks.
