Balochistan Reaffirms Ban on Wire Nets to Safeguard Marine Ecosystem

QUETTA: The Additional Deputy Commissioner General, Dr. Abdul Shakoor and the Director of Fisheries and Marine, Ahmad Nadeem have reaffirmed their commitment to enforcing the ban on wire net fishing along the Balochistan’s coastal belt, emphasizing its ecological harm and illegality under current fisheries laws.

These directives were given by the Director General of Fisheries, Balochistan, Qaim Khan Lashari. A meeting was held, was attended by Deputy Director Fisheries Mushtaq Baloch, Assistant Director Shah Fahad, and various representatives of fishermen’s organizations.

The meeting centered on the environmental risks and legal concerns associated with the use of wire nets, a method known to endanger marine biodiversity by indiscriminately trapping aquatic life.

While most community representatives voiced strong support for the ban, a few expressed concerns over the economic impact on fishermen reliant on such gear.

Dr. Shakoor emphasized that the Department of Fisheries holds the authority to interpret and enforce marine regulations and that any decision would prioritize both environmental sustainability and the livelihoods of local fishing communities.

Director Ahmad Nadeem reinforced the legal stance, stating, the use of wire nets remains strictly prohibited due to their devastating effects on marine ecosystems.”

In a move to support small-scale fishermen, Nadeem also announced a provisional allowance for the use of the traditional “Jhal” fishing net — a less harmful alternative that aligns with sustainable practices.
