Balochistan launches Anti-Polio campaign amid tragedy in Chaman

QUETTA: Balochistan Chief Secretary Shakeel Qadir Khan launched a special anti-polio campaign in the province. The campaign was formally inaugurated at a ceremony in Quetta, where the chief secretary administered polio drops to children.

The launch followed a high-level meeting of the Polio Task Force chaired by Khan. In this regard, Khan said the vaccination drive will begin on September 1 across 26 districts, with the target of immunising nearly two million children against poliovirus.

He underlined the progress made in recent months, noting that 22 of the 23 environmental samples collected from across the province tested negative.

However, he cautioned that continued vigilance was essential. In this sense, where thousands of health workers, supported by provincial authorities and international partners, will be mobilised for the campaign, with particular focus on reaching high-risk and underserved areas.

Moreover, a supervisor of the anti-polio drive was shot dead by unidentified gunmen in Chaman, on the Pak-Afghan border, on the same day the campaign was launched.
