QUETTA: In a major step towards modernizing urban transport and improving air quality, the Balochistan government has decided to phase out rickshaws from central Quetta and replace them with electric cars.
Giving an interview to private TV channel, Secretary of Transport Hayat Kakar revealed that the project will be implemented soon under a public-private partnership model.
He said that the district administration has declared major roads in the city center as no-parking zones. Kakar added that rickshaws will be banned from entering Quetta’s main commercial hub, now being referred to as “Downtown.”
Regarding the government plan to introduce electric vehicles, Kakar said that the provincial government wants to introduce electric vehicles in place of rickshaws to reduce congestion and improve air quality in Quetta. Two private companies have already expressed interest in participating in the project.
