South Africa Star Defends Babar Azam’s Demotion in Batting Order

COLOMBO: Former South Africa captain Faf du Plessis has backed Pakistan’s decision to move Babar Azam down the batting order in T20 cricket.

He said head coach Mike Hesson made a tactical call based on match strategy.

Du Plessis noted that modern T20 cricket demands an aggressive strike rate in the first six overs. He said players who rely on classical stroke play, like Babar, can sometimes struggle to match that early tempo.

He added that Hesson has not overlooked Babar’s ability. Instead, he said, the coach assigned him a role that better suits his strengths and experience.

In recent matches, Pakistan has used Babar at number four. However, in a key game against Namibia national cricket team, selectors included him in the playing XI but did not send him in to bat.
